Proverbs | Wisdom to Get Started Right

In this blog post, we'll learn about the wisdom literature of the Bible. We’re going to begin with one of the best-known, most loved books in the Bible and that’s the book of Proverbs. This is a book about life – your real life – your 9 to 5, day-in, day-out grind. It’s practical and chocked full of wisdom for navigating the challenges life throws our way. If you haven’t figured it out by now, it’s our choices, not chance, that determines our destiny. The message of Proverbs, taken to heart, can help you make a better future.

In the 31 chapters of Proverbs, the phrase "my son" occurs some 26 times. These are the proverbs of King Solomon of Israel, David's son, written to teach his people how to live.

1. Things that Make the Book of Proverbs Unique

Solomon, renowned for his wisdom, composed thousands of proverbs and songs. Proverbs are verbal shorthand, offering short statements based on long experience. They provide guidelines, not guarantees, offering general truths rather than absolutes.

2. The Quest for Wisdom

Solomon's profound wish for wisdom, granted by God, emphasizes its supreme importance. Wisdom is the special skill of making life-enhancing choices. The starting point is the fear of the Lord, an astonished reverence and acknowledgment of God's greatness.

3. You Must Choose One of Two Paths in Life

Proverbs repeatedly urges us to examine the path we're on. It emphasizes the importance of gaining prudence and understanding, making right decisions, and choosing a path of wisdom. The choice between paths is a recurring theme, urging readers to avoid the pitfalls of the simple and foolish.

4. Beware of the Solomon Paradox

Despite Solomon's wisdom, his life faced challenges. The Solomon Paradox highlights the difficulty of following one's own advice. To counteract it, creating distance for clarity, cultivating truth-telling friendships, and embracing open rebuke are suggested.

As we delve into the Proverbs, we embark on a journey of wisdom. The lessons from Solomon's life, the uniqueness of Proverbs, and the choice between paths serve as guides for navigating the complexities of life. Let's embrace the wisdom that stands the test of time, making prudent choices as we navigate the intricate web of existence.
